May 2022’s PS Plus free games have no story on their side

On April 27, Sony will reveal the next selection of PSMore games for May. They will replace the free PS Plus games for April 2022, which include Hood: Outlaws and Legends, Kill the Arrowand SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. Many weren’t happy with this month’s selection, and maybe they’re hoping that May will come with something better.

It’s certainly possible, but it’s also possible that fans are setting themselves up for disappointment. PS Plus tends to follow patterns month after month and sometimes year after year, as seen in March 2022. March tends to feature some of the best PS Plus games of the year, if not the absolute best, and March 2022 continued this streak. The flip side is that May tends to feature some of the worst games of the year. Whether Sony breaks this pattern remains to be seen, but it might be better to wait until the May 2022 PS Plus free games are revealed, with no real expectation of quality.

PS Plus Free Games For May 2022 – A Month With A Long History

It should be noted that, on their own, these games are not “bad” games. They just didn’t mesh well with how a subscription service like PS Plus works. May tends to be a lackluster month, often because the games on offer have such limited appeal. If at least one of the games on offer doesn’t strike a certain chord with fans, it’s an uphill battle when it comes to public opinion.

Looking back, the free PS Plus games of May 2019 featured What Remains of Edith Finch and Overcooked!. Both are good games with cult-like followings, but the key phrase is cult-like. What Remains of Edith Finch is a mystery adventure game played through short anthology-style segments, and that style might not have been the most intriguing for many PS Plus subscribers. Overcooked! is simply a cooking game and it had the co-op benefit, but it was still something with limited appeal. The games aren’t bad either, and they were decent additions to the service. However, compared to other heavy hitters on PS Plus in 2019, this month fell into the lower half of the year.

Free PS Plus Games for May – Controversial and Underwhelming

Hands down, one of the worst and most controversial months in PS Plus history was May 2020. Not necessarily Sony’s fault, to be fair, but prior to the May 2020 reveal, a huge rumor circulated online that the games would be dying light and Dark Souls Remastered. It lit a fire under many fans and the hype was palpable, but it was far from true. Instead, Sony revealed Cities: Skylines and Farming Simulator 19 be the free games of the month. Both are good simulators, but simulators are somewhat niche in today’s gaming atmosphere.

Neither had the broad appeal that, perhaps, dying light and dark souls would have had. Many were incredibly upset as a result. It even resulted in a petition, signed by thousands, for Sony to change the PS Plus free games for May 2020. Needless to say, this month went straight to the bottom.

In May 2021, the overall appeal of PS Plus titles was better. It featured Wreckage Party, Battlefield 5, and Failed deep, the latter also experiencing a particular resurgence in popularity at the time. However, it should be noted that 2021 has been a special year for PS Plus. The PS5, as everyone knows, was released in November 2020, and PS Plus had tried their best to really support this late 2020/early 2021 release. There were several great games released during this time. . So, comparing this month to other deals throughout the year (Control, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Remnant, Star Wars: Squadrons, A Plague Taleand many more), May 2021 still fell flat.

Overall, May tends to fall towards the second half of PS Plus’s offerings, at the very least. No one can guess why this is happening, but it could have something to do with the general timing or release patterns. Either way, combine that with the weird back and forth that PS Plus free games for 2022 have had so far, and it’s perhaps best to restate expectations for the month ahead.

PSMore subscribers receive a handful of free games each month.
