A new month means a new selection of PSMore games (as well as more on other services). Many were hoping May Games would redeem April’s selection, and while that might not exactly be the case, PS Plus May 2022 Free Games are at least a bit better. Until June 7, fans will be able to claim FIFA 22 (PS5/PS4), Tribes of Midgard (PS5/PS4), and Curse of the Dead Gods (PS4).
But big change is on the horizon. PS Plus subscribers will be able to upgrade in June 2022 and get either PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium. At the top level, not only will players be able to experience some of the best PS4/PS5 games for free, but they will also have access to over 700 games across the PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 eras. Throw in the PlayStation game demos too, and PS Plus Premium has plenty of them, though the cost is debatable.
May 2022 PS Plus Free Games vs April 2022
But before we look at next month and why fans can expect some really great free PS Plus games in June 2022, it’s worth looking at the last two months. May 2022 is better than April 2022, but it still falls into some common pitfalls. FIFA 22, for example, is a sports simulator. These usually don’t perform well on subscription services, simply because they’re annual releases and die-hard fans usually pick them up when they’re released, not waiting months after. Meanwhile, Tribes of Midgard and Curse of the Dead Gods are good games, but their appeal is limited. If someone doesn’t like their unique graphics, dungeon crawling mechanics, or roguelike features, these two games might not be for them.
At the very least, there’s more mainstream appeal there than with the April 2022 PS Plus free games. These were Hood: Outlaws and Legends, Kill the Arrowand SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. kill the arrow is perhaps the best game among the bunch, but at the same time, its map mechanics are going to deter many players from checking it out. Hood: Outlaws and Legends is a multiplayer game, which is generally good on subscription services, but it didn’t really click like it should. And then there is Spongebobwhich aside from all the Nickelodeon connection, the original game is better than the Rehydrated version of it, and that’s saying something.
While PS Plus subscribers have had a lackluster two months recently (although all of PS Plus in 2022 has been weird), there’s a major reason to expect June 2022 PS Plus free games to be really good.
Why the PS Plus free games for June 2022 could be really good
In short, Sony has always been very good at leveraging its PS Plus service as a hype builder when needed. Not only were there any remakes or games on the announcement before the sequels, but the entirety of PS Plus was used to market the PS5. Not that it needs more, but PS Plus has undoubtedly been useful in selling the PlayStation experience.
In the months leading up to the release of the PS5, PS Plus was on a roll with good month after good month. When the PS5 was released, the main PS5 games were added to the PS Plus service, several games were added in early 2021, and it eventually slowed down to its three games.
His effectiveness in promoting the PS5 cannot be underestimated. And that’s why it makes sense that Sony would use its selection of free PS Plus Essentials games to bolster PS Plus itself. If fans see good games on PS Plus Essentials for June 2022, maybe a few months later, that will make the PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium tiers even more appealing. While the entry level is exciting, many will think the more expensive level is worth it. Sure, it may sell out with the backward compatible library and all that, but it’ll have to keep rolling out new additions to keep subscribers on board. And the best way to do that, right now anyway, is with PS Plus free games.
Why June 2022’s free PS Plus games might not set a new standard
It would make sense for Sony to pursue this path, but it’s also a double-edged sword. It is feared that, if this happened, it would only be temporary. This is effectively the law of diminishing returns. The better the PS Plus games are at launch, the more likely it is to retain or attract subscribers. But at some point, the price and effort put into the PS Plus Essentials tier won’t be worth it, and Sony will have to really push the higher tiers.
So, in the long run, it’s possible that PS Plus free monthly games will suffer for the top tier. That remains to be seen, but if the PS Plus free games for 2022 has proven anything so far, it’s that not every month will be good. Sony has reason to do so for June and possibly a few months after, but like Xbox Games with Gold and Game Pass, PS Plus free games could suffer from a more attractive subscription level.
