November will be a huge month for PSVR owners with plenty of free games

0

Sony has announced that PlayStation VR owners will be rewarded with a trio of free games next month, if they also have a PlayStation Plus membership.

The gaming giant is celebrating five years of PSVR with the giveaway, but isn’t quite ready to reveal what games will be offered to headphone owners. Sony says there are over 500 games and experiences available on PSVR, so we’re hoping for some big hitters.

As part of the platform’s fifth anniversary, the company also revealed the most played games to date, when it comes to playing hours. These are Rec Room, Beat Saber, PlayStation VR Worlds, The Elder Scrolls V and the Resident Evil VII: Biohazard experience.

These are global figures, but they are also true for Europe. Hopefully, they’ll be one of the games Sony has up its sleeve for next month’s giveaway.

While Sony’s PSVR 2 headset isn’t expected until this time next year at the earliest, there are still plenty of great games on the horizon for the current headset.

Sony is highlighting Moss: Book II, Wanderer, After the Fall, Humanity, Puzzling Places, and Zenith: The Last City, for starters, in a post on the PlayStation blog.

Earlier this year, Sony confirmed that there will be a second-generation PlayStation VR headset that will harness the extra power of the PlayStation 5 console.

Sony recently told developers in a private conference that the new model will offer 4000 x 2040 (2000 x 2040 per eye) resolution and an OLED HDR panel with a 100-degree field of view. The refresh rate will also be important here.

Sony has also promised new controllers for the PSVR 2, which will offer “a greater focus on ergonomics.” Since the PSVR is based on the older Move controllers, this will be a much appreciated update.

In the meantime, Epic continues to grapple with the fallout from its war with Apple, which has taken every company to court for those kinds of months. A dispute that also came from Fortnite, which may not return to the apple ecosystem for another five years.

Eight tips to boost your brain, from video games to daydreaming

0

From brain training apps to books, games, and online courses, there are plenty of gadgets and gadgets that promise to make us smarter. But is it really possible to increase your intelligence?

According to experts, yes.

Dr Caroline Leaf, cognitive neuroscientist and author of Clean up your mental mess, explains, “Cutting-edge brain research over the past few decades indicates that intelligence is not static and can be improved – or reduced – by the way you manage your mind.

“The mind and the brain are separate, but they work together. Just as not cleaning your teeth will affect your dental health, not exercising your mind can damage the brain and lead to cognitive decline.

“To develop our intelligence, keep our brains active and healthy, and improve our memory, we must continue to stimulate and challenge our minds. “

How to survive an empty nest when your kids are leaving home

While exercising your mind can include anything from games to socializing and even traveling – all of which have been proven to activate brain cells – other factors such as how we sleep, how we sleep, how we sleep work environment and our stress levels also influence our brain power.
So how do we keep our brains flexible and sharp?

Here, the experts disclose their best advice to I.

To sleep

Sleep is essential for your brain (Photographer: Maiwolf Photography / Getty)

Not surprisingly, sleep is one of the most important factors in keeping your brain healthy. The making of memories takes place in three stages: acquisition, consolidation and recall.

The first two stages occur while we are awake, but the third (where information is embedded in long-term memory) can only occur while we are asleep.

Getting a good night’s sleep also improves our attention and concentration, which are a prerequisite for most learning, and supports many other aspects of thinking, including memory, problem solving, creativity, processing. emotions and judgment – = so striving to reach the six recommended by the NHS at nine o’clock closing your eyes each night is essential to getting your brain in tip-top shape.

Dream

Getting lost in thought has often been considered a habit of those who are easily distracted, but according to Dr. Leaf, daydreaming is an essential part of improving our brain power.

“Spontaneous thought processes, including mental wandering, creative thinking, and daydreaming, fuel brain networks and improve brain health,” she explains.

“Allowing only one to five minutes at least twice a day for these ‘moments of reflection’ is an important way of developing intelligence, allowing us to examine our own inner life and develop our unique imaginations. “

Move

Walking can help us remember new foreign language vocabulary (Photo: The National Trust / Arnhel de Serra)

German researchers have found that walking or cycling while learning helps us retain new foreign language vocabulary, while controlled experiments in children, adults and the elderly have shown that the hippocampus – the heart brain learning and memory systems – grows as people get fitter. .

Education neuroscientist Dr Rebecca Torrance Jenkins explains, “There’s a reason ‘walk-in meetings’ are a must-have communication method for some of the most successful businesses in the world.

“Being active helps us learn by improving our alertness, our attention and our motivation. It prepares and encourages neurons to connect with each other – which is the basis of learning – as well as improving our creativity, boosting our memory, and even slowing cognitive decline with age.

Challenge your mind

We all know that physical exercise keeps our bodies strong, and now scientific evidence suggests that mental exercise keeps our brains young.

Brain games and exercises activate our neural circuits and strengthen our mental acuity capacities.

But while becoming a Sudoku ace is great for wowing your friends, the key is to gradually increase the difficulty of these activities so that they continue to be challenging.

Dr. Leaf advises setting aside an hour a day to select an article, TV show, game, podcast, or book on a topic that interests you.

“Then think deeply about what you read, watch, do or listen to, instead of just doing the activity automatically.

“By directing your thinking, you can develop neural networks in your brain that can help increase intelligence.”

Activities that require physical and mental dexterity – such as drawing, painting, and crafts – have a similar effect.

Optimize your workspace

A room with a lot of clutter and distractions is associated with poorer cognitive performance, as our brains prioritize vision over all other senses.

“Noticing new things was especially helpful for ancient human survival, but now it can serve as a distraction,” says Dr. Jenkins.

“A quiet office environment gives your brain a break from ceaselessly processing too much detail, while being exposed to lots of natural light also improves brain performance.

“If you enjoy listening to music while you work, then listening to instrumental tracks will help channel your brain, as speech processing uses your brain’s language center and steals valuable cognitive resources. “

Fight stress

Chronic stress has been shown to kill brain cells and may even reduce the size of your prefrontal cortex – the part of your brain responsible for memory, concentration, and learning.

“Our brains haven’t really changed since the Stone Age,” says Dr. Jenkins.

“Back then, thinking about potential problems and what could go wrong helped us stay alive, but nowadays those worries can prevent us from learning new things.

“Using mindfulness techniques to calm anxious thoughts can help, as can meditation, yoga, and spending time with friends and family to lower cortisol levels. “

Play video games

Gamers around the world will be happy to know that video games are extremely beneficial for the brain.

“When we play a computer game, the ones with the best focus, the fastest responses, and the greatest working memories get the best results,” says Dr. Jenkins.

“It would be surprising if the brain didn’t make the corresponding neurological changes to support these behaviors, and there is a considerable body of recent research proving that gaming gives you faster visual processing speeds, better low-level vision, better control of attention and increased stretches of working memory – when played in moderation.

Try new things

When your brain is exposed to a new and complex environment, it responds by forming new connections while trying to categorize these unusual stimuli.

This creates synaptic connections in the brain, which build on each other to increase your neural activity. Constantly exposing yourself to new things helps your brain prepare for learning.

Trying something new can start this process, from navigating a foreign city to making a new recipe, visiting a museum, or even using your non-dominant hand to brush your teeth.

Over 60 million free games collected through the PlayStation Play At Home initiative

0

Sony announced that more than 60 million free games have been used as part of its Play At Home initiative, which aimed to provide people with entertainment while they stay at home during the pandemic.

The initiative began in April 2020, with the first games on offer, including Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey. In total, the initiative consisted of four campaigns or stages.

Since then, over 60 million games have been bought back by gamers. This includes 11 million VR titles, as well as over 30 million indie games.

Players have also used over 4 million add-ons and in-game content.

During the initiative, Sony offered Ratchet & Clank, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Witness, Subnautica and other titles.

The most recent additions were added in May 2021 and included add-ons and in-game DLCs. This was the latest content drop for the initiative.

Players who have traded games during their eligibility period can keep them.

While the Play At Home initiative has come to an end, storefronts like Epic Games continue to periodically promote free games.

These are picked up during the holiday period. Indeed, in 2020, Epic Games announced 15 days of free games.

With many people around the world staying at home in the face of the pandemic, we hope that more free-to-play initiatives can help people be entertained without straining their wallets.

Apple makes more money from video games than Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony combined

0

The relationship between Apple and games is not linear. The company doesn’t produce video games or devices designed just to play them, moreover, over the past year and a half, the legal battle with a publisher, Epic Games, has moderated online discussions and wrote a small or large page of the relationship between developers and owners. digital platforms. On the other hand, games are a very important source of income for Apple, according to an analysis reported by the Wall Street Journal, to the point of outperforming the video game divisions of companies such as Sony and Microsoft, and companies that link all of their business to them, such as Nintendo and Activision Blizzard..

Operating profit per game, which therefore comes mainly from games available on the App Store, would have amounted in 2019 to 8,500 million dollars, a figure higher than that obtained by adding those of the four companies mentioned above. A value that came out in the process that saw Apple oppose Epic Games and which the company led by Tim Cook defined higher than the real one, but which is believable when you cross some data and evidence. For Sensor Tower, the App Store in fiscal 2019 reportedly reported $ 15.9 billion in revenue, 69% of which came from games, or roughly $ 10.9 billion. With an operating profit of 75% on income obtained through the App Store, a value which was also considered valid by the judge in the case against Epic Games, we come to what the Wall Street Journal also reports. .

Interesting how the American newspaper highlights these impressive numbers, yes, but At the same time, some potential issues that Apple could face in the years to come.. On the one hand, the judgment rendered in the case against Epic could change the course and allow developers to monetize their work without necessarily going through the payment system integrated into Apple’s marketplace. Especially if regulatory bodies like the American and the European must intervene.

On the other hand, in recent weeks in China, the headwind for gamers seems to be strengthening, with new rules and limits: a problem considering that 30% of the money raised through games on the App Store would come from the Asian country. , first against the United States, stopped at 26%.

In short, although it is not always so evident in Apple’s daily communication, video games and gamers are fundamental for the company and the coming years are, on the one hand, rich in opportunities, thanks to the the practically unstoppable rise of mobile games, but also of some pitfalls.

Video games keep me from feeling lonely

0

The morning of my preliminary exam, I was so tired. I hadn’t slept through the night for about a week. The bags under my eyes were bigger than the suitcases I wanted to pack for a getaway trip.

As I sipped my coffee, I felt my kidneys scream at me; they hadn’t seen much more than coffee and an occasional sip of water in a few days. I was exhausted, and my brain couldn’t fit one more piece of information into it without risking all the other information falling out.

My preliminary examination – the obstacle to pass to the doctorate. candidate – involved a seven-page National Institutes of Health-style grant proposal on my project and an oral defense of said project before my thesis committee. Normally, the oral defense is done in person, but due to COVID-19, my preliminary exam took place on Zoom.

I sat at my kitchen table that morning with my laptop in front of me and clicked on the Zoom app. As it opened, I jumped out of my chair to grab a container of treats that I could throw at my pussy Luna to silence her in my defense. Luna is a tiny tuxedo cat, but you’d never guess her size from her louder-than-life meow. She wants to be involved in every Zoom call, and now wasn’t the day for that.

Allie smith

The author’s cat, Luna, does her second favorite thing next to talking during Zoom calls – playing.

As soon as the Zoom app opened, it crashed over and over again. I opened Twitter frantically and saw the “Zoom global shutdown” banner.

Tears started to flow from my eyes as all the emotions I had suppressed during my weeks of non-stop preparation erupted like a long dormant volcano. One of my committee members saw the Twitter notification and wrote, “We should reschedule. “

I felt like I was going to throw up. I couldn’t put off this exam any longer. My poor kidneys and my brain needed a break.

A moment later, another member of the committee stepped in to save the day by wearing a Google Hangout cape. She had already created a room and invited us all to it. I felt better; the only thing I knew I couldn’t do was postpone this exam. I needed this to be done.

The oral defense went so quickly that it was practically over as soon as it started. We chatted about science while I tried to quietly throw cat treats at Luna to keep her meowing at a minimum. Ninety minutes went by and before I knew it I was asked to leave the meeting so the committee could decide if I would pass.

I called my friend Allie who is also in my graduate program to tell her that I thought everything had gone well. As soon as the call was connected and I got three syllables out of my mouth, the committee asked that I join the meeting. I had succeeded – and brilliantly nothing less.

The mental Tetris that I played to cram every piece of information out of every historical diary has paid off. The hours I spent mapping each experiment I came up with and how any outcome might change the direction of the project paid off. As soon as I skipped the Zoom call, I heard a knock on my door. My girlfriend was standing on the other side, listening for a lull in the conversation so she could come in. She had a bag of my favorite comfort items from Target so we could celebrate whatever the outcome. An extra-large pack of Sour Patch Kids, a candle, a new stress ball, and Pokémon cards were spilling out of the bag.

I passed my pre-exam, but struggled a lot during the preparation so far. I felt under-prepared, overworked and disconnected from the doctoral school and my department. A handful of people, including my wonderful advisor, Justin Kumar, kept telling me that everything was going to be fine, that I was prepared and that I was going to be successful. But I found it hard to believe them because I couldn’t believe the expectations for me would be the same as before COVID-19. We were stuck in our homes without seeing friends, families, or even our lab benches for at least six months. How could the expectations be the same? And how could I do like the students before me who took this exam without the looming threat of a global pandemic?

I spent many anxious hours wondering how I could convince myself, and therefore my thesis jury, that I was worthy of taking the exam when I had not been able to work for almost six months? How could I convince my committee that I was worthy of becoming a doctorate. candidate when I had been stuck in my apartment, alone, spitting on all the reasons why I might not belong to graduate school?

If you’ve read this far, you’re probably wondering, what does this have to do with video games? I know. I know. So now let me tell you.

Being locked in a tiny apartment with the threat of pre-exams hanging over my head made me feel more lonely than ever – so I needed to find new ways to connect with other people. One way I did this was through video games.

When we couldn’t be physically side by side on the couch watching our favorite TV show, we would watch it together on Netflix Party (now Teleparty). When we couldn’t go on vacation we would visit each other Animal crossing he is. When we couldn’t accept our own impostor syndrome, we tried to be the best humanly possible impostor in Among us.

Allie smith

The author and his girlfriend Megan (left) have a virtual date night on Animal Crossing.

By playing video games, you could spend an hour or two (or seven) immersed in a world that was not ours. We didn’t have to worry about preliminary exams because in this world they didn’t exist. Instead, we might just worry about paying our insanely expensive virtual mortgage to Tom nook.

As a graduate student, the past year has had its challenges – from not being able to be with friends and family (I haven’t seen my family since December 2019) to high demands on the job of laboratory and higher education expectations. When my depression started to return from being alone and overwhelmed, video games offered peaceful comfort.

That I was playing alone, online with friends in my new favorite Tic community or Zoom, during those minutes or hours, I was not alone. I had my villagers on my island, my teammates in Among Us, my friends who didn’t care about all the nonsense Quiplash had to offer and the other members of Alex (Xandy) Schiefer’s HogPen (co-host of the brilliantly hilarious podcasts “Beach too sandy, water too humid” and “Human in search of the human”) Twitch stream to keep me company.

For many of us, the friends who were already there or made during this time are friends who will last a lifetime; they showed us that during the darkest times they would not leave and that we would never be alone.

If I spent even a single minute with you last year on Zoom, Twitch, or playing any video game to seek solace in our day-to-day life, I would like to thank you. With you, I passed my preliminary exam.
